With the support of LEADER, in April 2010 New Start Highland opened a new community outlet in Kinlochleven .  This new outlet is enabling New Start to develop a community furniture and electrical service and invest in the local community in Lochaber.

New Start Highland is a growing local charity in the Highlands that supports people who have been experiencing a period of vulnerability or social exclusion as they settle into a new home.  New Start collects, free of charge, good quality furniture that would otherwise go to landfill and distributes these household items to people who could not otherwise afford them, supporting them as they establish and maintain their home.

The Kinlochleven community outlet, which is accessible to anyone, stocks a range of new and second hand furniture and electrical items. Mairi Macaulay, Operations Manager says:  “The community outlets are a great way of providing a service to the local community whilst generating necessary funds to support the excellent charitable work of New Start. Through delivering a localised service we hope to offer Kinlochleven and the surrounding area an effective tailored service.” 

The community outlet, which is linked to a warehouse in Lochaber,  also provides local jobs, employment training placements, and volunteering opportunities. Mairi Macaulay says “Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, take advantage of new opportunities and get involved in the local community”.
